Bedfordshire, also known as "Beds" is an area of rural beauty with many small villages in the north and a few larger towns in the South of the County, the largest being the town of Luton which includes Dunstable. Other larger towns include Bedford, Biggleswade, Sandy, Flitwick and Leighton Buzzard. The highest point is 797 feet (243 metres) on Dunstable Downs near Whipsnade in the Chilterns. The southern end of the county is part of the Chalk hills known as the Chilterns. The remainder is largely sandy loam and is part of the broad drainage basin of the River Great Ouse and its tributaries. Bedfordshire is an old "Shire" County and the first recorded use of the name was in 1011 as "Bedanfordscir", meaning "Beda's ford".

The County is well served by road transport routes centred mainly on Bedford The rail transport route is the Midland Main Line service from London that call at the stations of Luton, Flitwick, Harlington and Bedford, The Motorway M1 which passes between Luton and Dunstable towards Harlington, The A1 which pass to the east through Biggleswade and Sandy, the A5 through Dunstable towards Leighton Buzzard and the A6 which passes north through Luton and Bedford.
